A Traditional Herb in Western Herbalism
Marshmallow has been valued for centuries throughout Europe and Western Asia, where its roots, leaves and flowers have appeared in traditional herbal preparations.
The plant takes its name from its historical association with marshes and other damp environments, where it grows naturally.
The root has been particularly appreciated in traditional European herbalism for its naturally occurring mucilage, a characteristic that distinguishes it from many other botanical roots.
Naturally Rich in Mucilage
Marshmallow Root contains mucilage, a group of naturally occurring plant polysaccharides that develop a smooth, slightly slippery texture when combined with water.
Unlike many roots traditionally prepared by simmering, Marshmallow Root is especially well suited to cold infusion.
Allowing the cut root to steep gradually in cool water produces a distinctive herbal preparation with a soft, silky consistency.
Its mild flavour also makes Marshmallow Root suitable for blending with other herbs.
