Organic Juniper Berries – Whole Juniperus communis

Organic Juniper Berries are whole dried berries of Juniperus communis, sourced from Albania and Croatia. Intensely aromatic with a distinctive pine-like, resinous flavour, juniper has a long history of use in European herbalism as well as in traditional foods and beverages.

Juniper berries are traditionally used in Herbal Medicine to aid digestion, stimulate appetite and help relieve digestive disturbances such as excessive gas. They are also traditionally used to help relieve benign urinary tract infections.

A Distinctively Aromatic Berry

Despite their common name, juniper berries are not true botanical berries. They are the small, fleshy seed cones produced by the female juniper plant. Their blue-purple colour develops as they mature, along with the characteristic aromatic oils for which juniper is known.

Juniper berries naturally contain volatile oils and other plant compounds that give them their unmistakable fresh, woody and resinous aroma.

Whole Berries for Tea & Culinary Use

Our juniper berries are offered whole, allowing you to see the natural quality and character of the botanical ingredient. For an infusion, the berries can be lightly crushed immediately before steeping to release more of their aromatic oils.

Beyond herbal preparations, juniper has a long culinary history. Its bold, piney flavour is traditionally used with savoury dishes, marinades and spice blends and is famously responsible for the characteristic botanical flavour of gin.

Infusion: Lightly crush approximately 1 teaspoon of whole Juniper Berries per cup (250 ml) of boiling water. Cover and steep for 10–15 minutes, then strain.
