Gynostemma Leaf – Jiaogulan
Ask a QuestionGynostemma Leaf – Jiaogulan (Southern Ginseng)
Gynostemma Leaf, also known as Jiaogulan, is prepared from Gynostemma pentaphyllum, a climbing vine native to parts of Asia. Sometimes called Southern Ginseng or Five-Leaf Ginseng, Jiaogulan has a long history of use as an herbal tea, particularly in southern China and other regions of East and Southeast Asia.
Jiaogulan has traditionally been consumed as an everyday herbal tea and is particularly valued for its association with vitality, endurance and general well-being. It is often described as an adaptogenic herb because of its traditional use in helping the body maintain balance during periods of physical and mental stress.
Gynostemma naturally contains a distinctive group of plant compounds known as gypenosides, along with naturally occurring flavonoids and other phytochemicals. Gypenosides are structurally related to some of the saponins found in true ginseng, which helps explain why Jiaogulan acquired the popular name “Southern Ginseng.”
Jiaogulan or Ginseng?
Despite the name Southern Ginseng, Gynostemma pentaphyllum is not a true ginseng and does not belong to the Panax genus. Jiaogulan is a member of the cucumber family (Cucurbitaceae), while true ginsengs such as Panax ginseng and Panax quinquefolius belong to the Araliaceae family. “Southern Ginseng” is a traditional common name rather than a botanical classification.
Gynostemma leaf produces a pleasantly herbal cup with a mild natural sweetness and a slightly earthy finish. It can be enjoyed on its own or blended with complementary herbs such as tulsi, peppermint, licorice root or green tea.
