Organic Gotu Kola Leaf
Ask a QuestionOrganic Gotu Kola Leaf – Centella asiatica
Organic Gotu Kola Leaf is sourced from India and prepared from Centella asiatica, an important botanical with a long history of use in both Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Traditionally associated with memory, focus and cognitive health, Gotu Kola has been valued throughout Asia as both an herbal preparation and food.
The dried leaf has a mild, earthy and slightly bitter character and can be prepared as an herbal infusion, incorporated into loose tea blends or used in traditional herbal preparations.
A Traditional Ayurvedic Herb
Gotu Kola has been used in Ayurveda for centuries and is traditionally associated with the mind, memory and concentration. It is considered a medhya herb in Ayurvedic tradition, a category of botanicals historically associated with intellect and cognitive function. Unlike many herbs associated with mental alertness, Gotu Kola is naturally caffeine free and is not a stimulant.
Gotu Kola in Traditional Chinese Medicine
Centella asiatica also has a history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it is known as Ji Xue Cao. Its traditional applications extend beyond cognitive use, and the herb has a distinct place within Chinese herbal practice. Its presence in both Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal traditions makes Gotu Kola particularly interesting among the botanicals in our collection.
Gotu Kola or Brahmi?
Gotu Kola and Bacopa are two completely different plants, although their common names can sometimes cause confusion. Gotu Kola is Centella asiatica, while the Brahmi offered in our collection is Bacopa monnieri. Both have histories of use in Ayurveda and have traditionally been associated with the mind and cognitive function, but they are botanically distinct herbs.
In some regions and traditions, Gotu Kola may itself be referred to as Brahmi. Checking the botanical name is therefore the most reliable way to know which herb you are purchasing.
Gotu Kola should also not be confused with kola nut. Despite the similarity in their common names, they are unrelated plants, and Gotu Kola naturally contains no caffeine.
