Schisandra Berries – The Five-Flavour Berry of Traditional Chinese Medicine

Schisandra Berries are a distinctive botanical treasured in Traditional Chinese Medicine for their remarkable flavour and centuries-old history. Known as Wu Wei Zi, meaning Five-Flavour Berry, Schisandra chinensis is celebrated for its unusual combination of sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent taste characteristics.

These small, deep-red berries produce a beautifully aromatic herbal infusion with a lively tartness and complex, lingering finish.

A pure, single-ingredient botanical with nothing added.

The Five-Flavour Berry

Schisandra chinensis is a climbing woody vine native to northern China and neighbouring regions of East Asia.

Its clusters of bright red berries have been appreciated for generations in traditional herbal preparations and regional food culture.

The Chinese name Wu Wei Zi refers to the five flavours traditionally associated with the fruit: sweet, sour, salty, bitter and pungent.

Although the tart and sour notes are often the most immediately noticeable, Schisandra's layered flavour is what makes it particularly distinctive among herbal berries.

A Treasured Botanical in Traditional Chinese Medicine

Schisandra has a long and respected history in Traditional Chinese Medicine, where it is traditionally classified as a tonic herb.

Within the TCM system, Wu Wei Zi is associated with the Lung, Heart and Kidney meridians and has historically appeared in formulas concerned with preserving vitality and supporting balance.

Schisandra has also been traditionally associated with longevity, mental clarity and the nourishment of Jing, a concept within Chinese medicine relating to constitutional vitality.

These associations reflect the traditional framework of Chinese herbal medicine rather than established clinical effects of Schisandra tea.

A Traditional Beauty & Longevity Botanical

Throughout its history, Schisandra has been celebrated in Chinese herbal culture as a botanical associated with beauty, longevity and vitality.

Its reputation as a traditional beauty tonic reflects longstanding cultural beliefs about maintaining balance and well-being.

Today, Schisandra remains appreciated for its unique heritage, distinctive flavour and versatility in botanical preparations.

Naturally Occurring Plant Compounds

Schisandra Berries contain naturally occurring lignans, including schisandrin and related compounds, along with acids and other plant constituents.

These compounds have attracted scientific interest, particularly in research involving liver metabolism, oxidative stress and other biological processes.

However, laboratory findings and studies involving standardized extracts should not be considered equivalent to the effects of drinking a traditional Schisandra infusion.

A Distinctive Herbal Berry Tea

Schisandra produces an infusion with a lively, tart character and complex herbal undertones.

The berries can be enjoyed on their own or combined with other traditional botanicals.

For a beautifully balanced infusion, Schisandra pairs particularly well with Goji Berries, which contribute a mild natural sweetness that complements Schisandra's pronounced tartness.
