Schisandra chinensis is native to northern and northeastern China and is commonly known as wǔ wèi zi which means "five flavor berry" because it tantalizes the taste buds with all five basic flavors (sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungency). It is said to "calm the heart and quiet the spirit."
Schisandra has a long history in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is most known for boosting liver function and supporting healthy adrenal function and therefore helping to prevent adrenal fatigue. It is also known as a beauty tonic and is considered to be a youth preserving herb. It has been used for centuries to make the skin soft, healthy and radiant. It is said to be a powerful tonic to the brain and mind, and is believed in Chinese medicine to enhance mental and physical capacities, improve memory and used as a mood enhancer.
Moreover, Schisandra helps purify the blood, help maintain sexual energy and sexual functions in both men and women, and can improve cardiovascular function.
Suggested use: Recommended use: 1-6 grams per day. It is most frequently consumed in the form of an infusion, tea or stews. Steep in hot water for 10 minutes, For a tasty tea, steep with dried Goji berries. Alternately let soak in water for a day.
