Sarsaparilla has been traditionally used as a medicinal tonic, detoxifier and blood cleanser for thousands of years among native populations of Central and South America. Sarsaparilla gained popularity in Latin America for a soda created from the roots of wild Sarsaparilla that is similar to root beer. It is also believed that Native Americans used Sarsaparilla in the treatment of colds and coughs. The Europeans then introduced the plant in Europe in the treatment of infections, including sexually transmitted diseases.
Sarsaparilla has a long history of use In Ayurveda and Indian sarsaparilla (Hemidesmus indicus) is considered to be a digestive tonic, sleeping aid and helpful anti-inflammatory agent. There are over 300 different plant species of Sarsaparilla leading to varied uses and efficacy among the species.
Sarsaparilla is high in antioxidants, plant sterols, flavonoids, and saponins and said to be helpful in the treatment of balancing hormones, boosting immune strength and lowering fluid retention with natural detoxifying and diuretic qualities.
