Organic Plantain Leaf

Organic Plantain Leaf – Plantago major

Organic Plantain Leaf is prepared from Plantago major, a familiar leafy herb with a long history of use in traditional Western herbalism. Not to be confused with the banana-like plantain fruit, Plantago is a completely different plant valued for its leaves and traditional herbal uses.

Plantain leaf has traditionally been used for both respiratory and digestive support. Its naturally soothing character has made it a familiar ingredient in herbal preparations for irritated throats and coughs, while its traditional astringent properties have also led to its use in digestive preparations.

The leaves naturally contain mucilage, tannins, flavonoids and other plant compounds. Mucilage becomes particularly useful when the leaf is infused in water and contributes to plantain's traditional reputation as a soothing herb.

More Than a Tea

Plantain leaf also has a long history of external use in traditional herbalism. The leaves have been incorporated into poultices, washes, salves and other topical preparations traditionally used for minor skin irritation and insect bites. Dried plantain leaf can therefore be used for herbal infusions as well as a variety of homemade botanical preparations.

As a tea, plantain leaf produces a mild, earthy and pleasantly herbaceous infusion. It can be enjoyed on its own or blended with complementary herbs such as mullein, peppermint, licorice root or lemon balm.
