It is believed that the indigenous Guaycura in the Baja region of Mexico were the first to use Damiana. According to legend, the herb became wore widely distributed when the Guaycura began trading with the Aztecs. Damiana was also highly valued in ancient times by the Mayans, who used the plant in a similar manner to the Aztecs and the Guaycura.

The origin of the common name Damiana is from the Greek daman or damia meaning "to tame or subdue." It is the feminine version of Damian and infers that Damiana is the wild one "who tames." 


Damiana has been used as a mood support for symptoms of depression, anxiety and insomnia. It has a long history in Central and South America as a natural aphrodisiac and was traditionally used to both relax the body and improve energy levels. Damiana is considered to be an adaptogen as it helps the body’s natural response to stress. In addition, Damiana may help to lower pain especially headaches, muscle aches and cramps associated with menstrual cycles.
Damiana makes a great tea, it is also made into tincture and used in herbal smoking blends.

Fun fact: Damiana can help increase the frequency and potency of orgasms in women.

Suggested use:

 Add 1-2 teaspoon of dried leaf per cup of freshly boiled water.
