Cacao beans have a rich history in Central and South America beginning around 1500 BC - as part of the traditional medicine of the Mayan, Olmec and Aztec civilizations. Traditionally, Cacao fruit was eaten or fermented into alcohol and vinegar before the method of grinding and roasting the seeds was introduced. The traditional medicinal uses for Cacao were as a treatment for fatigue, support in weight gain when using the butter, softening skin, as an antiseptic for killing microbes around fresh wounds and as a snake bite remedy. Theobroma cacao has been found to contain 26 anti-inflammatories, an astringent and 5 vacoconstrictors as well as antiseptic properties. The many beneficial properties of cacao are destroyed when processed thus using raw cacao is essential.
